The School of Architecture in Alghero

In September 2002, the University of Sassari, founded in 1422, established a new School of Architecture in Alghero with two different courses: Architecture and Planning.
Even in the quite crowded scenario of the Faculties of Architecture in Italian Universities, this new School, directed by Giovanni Maciocco, was founded with the ambitious goal of bringing fresh ideas to an “old” academic ‘sanctum’

Why in Alghero?

The location of the Faculty was carefully selected to offer an exciting and stimulating environment to the students.
The town of Alghero was chosen for its historical importance, having been the only cultural enclave of Spanish civilization in Italy, and for the beauty of its position facing the sea.
An ideal location Set in North Sardinia, one of the main islands in the Mediterranean Sea, the Faculty of Architecture in Alghero is the only university location in the country to be built entirely in a historical and naturally beautiful area.
This branch of the University of Sassari in Alghero offers a unique environment for interdisciplinary study and an attractive urban environment which is an ideal setting for creativity .

Learning by doing Innovative educational programmes integrate theory with hands-on learning to produce successful architects. The courses are project-oriented: they explicitly call for design proposals rather than purely theoretical work. This does not preclude fundamental research but stresses the importance of its connection to the broader decision-making within a complex project. This method gives the students the best intellectual preparation combined with practical skills. It seeks to enable young people to find their orientation in a complex and rapidly changing world.

Teaching excellence Students will learn from inspiring, enthusiastic and award-winning Italian professionals and teaching staff, and higly reputed foreign teachers all specialists in their field (Valentin Bearth, David Chipperfield, Alan Fletcher, Willy Hüsler, Joao Nunes, Pierre Pinon, Carme Pinós, Luigi Snozzi, Eduardo Souto de Moura, Alexandre Tsoukias). Who better to teach you than experts working at the forefront of their field? Not only do they know their subject, they are also innovative in their expertise. Many students have the opportunity to participate directly in ground-breaking research work.

International relationships As a technical university with a worldwide perspective, the School of Architecture in Alghero can only compete with the world's best by establishing international links, by recruiting its academic and research staff worldwide, and by remaining attractive to students from abroad.

Life in Alghero

Our campus is situated in the beautiful historic centre of the city. The friendly and informal campus life in Alghero is a reflection of the community at large; Alghero is a tolerant, lively and exciting place. Alghero, capital of the Coral Coast, is one of the most coveted goals of the north-west coast thanks to its 80 km of sandy beaches, isolated inlets and charming cliffs. Alghero is located on the north-western coast of Sardinia and has a population of approximately 42,000 inhabitants. It is a very pretty city that combines an untouched medieval town centre reserved for pedestrians only with beautiful beaches and clear seas. Originally a fishing village, it was seized by the Genoese towards the end of the 12th century and became an important fortress. The city then fell under the control of the Catalans in the 14th century and to this day has many Catalonian characteristics, like the language.
Alghero Airport is approximately 10 kilometres to the north-west of the town centre and is directly connected to Rome, Milan and several important European cities, such as London, Frankfurt and Paris.
